Los Angeles School Bullying Incident Leads to Student's Death and Arrest

A 12-year-old student in Los Angeles has died following an alleged bullying incident at her school. Khimberly Zavaleta Chuquipa, aged 12, was reportedly struck in the head with a metal water bottle on February 17 while attempting to defend her older sister from harassment by other students. The incident occurred at Reseda Charter High School, which includes a middle school. Khimberly sustained severe injuries and passed away on February 25. Authorities arrested another 12-year-old student on Thursday on suspicion of murder in connection with the case. The Los Angeles Police Department, represented by Officer Charles Miller, confirmed the arrest but declined to release further details due to the juvenile status of both individuals involved. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office, which will handle potential charges, has not yet commented. The victim's family has filed a wrongful-death claim against the Los Angeles Unified School District, alleging the school failed to prevent the altercation. Family attorney Robert Glassman stated that while the arrest represents progress toward accountability, it does not address how such a tragedy could occur at the school. The case highlights ongoing concerns about bullying and student safety in educational settings.
