Long-Lived Butterflies Offer Clues to Healthy Aging

A study published in Nature Communications on June 16 reveals that Heliconius butterflies, found in South and Central American rainforests, can live up to 25 times longer than their relatives, with Heliconius hewitsoni surviving up to 348 days compared to Dione juno's 14 days. Researchers at Tufts University, led by Jessica Foley, investigated mechanisms behind this longevity, focusing on diet and muscle decline. While pollen consumption contributes to lifespan, experiments with Heliconius hecale and Dryas iulia showed that pollen-deprived H. hecale still outlived D. iulia, suggesting other factors at play. Grip strength tests revealed that H. hecale maintained strength with age, unlike D. iulia. The findings may translate to human aging research, as similar mechanisms often span the animal kingdom. The study also identified Myscelia cyaniris, the tropical blue wave, which can live up to 380 days.
