Live Wedding Caps Opening Night of Public Theater's Romeo & Juliet

At the opening night of the Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park production of Romeo & Juliet, director Saheem Ali made a memorable moment by hosting a real wedding for Oscar Diaz and Jannelly Mendoza at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Ali met the couple in a Laredo, Texas coffee shop, and they tied the knot in front of an audience of 1,800. His version of the play addresses immigration themes and includes border weddings at the US-Mexico wall. Each show will feature a different couple, officiated by actor Francis Jue or his understudy, both of whom are ordained. Ra'Mya Latiah Aikens impressively plays a bilingual Juliet. Celebrities like Lily Rabe and Angela Bassett were also in attendance. Oskar Eustis, the artistic director, emphasized that free Shakespeare belongs to New York City.
