Liang-Hsin Huang Explores Nature Through Comic Zines After International Moves

Illustrator and animator Liang-Hsin Huang has shifted from creating hand-painted animations to producing comic zines that document her experiences with natural landscapes. Based in London after living in Taiwan and France, Huang's recent travels have influenced her artwork, incorporating elements like forests, cities, seas, and cliffs. She finds comic zines ideal for capturing fragmented memories and narratives, offering a less pressured approach compared to her previous animation work. Her latest zine, 'The North Downs Way,' was inspired by a walk along chalk cliffs with friends, transforming observations into imaginative scenarios such as mini-golf on hills. Another comic, 'The Clouds,' draws from her engagement with The Cloud Appreciation Society, featuring short stories based on cloud sightings shared globally. Huang experiments with various mediums like Copic markers, colored pencils, and chalk to achieve textured effects, emphasizing color layering and diverse palettes to immerse readers. This transition has allowed her to explore materials more freely, blending digital and traditional techniques. The project reflects a personal journey through changing environments, highlighting how movement and observation shape creative expression in visual storytelling.
