Lewis Baltz Retrospective at Albertina: Photography as Art

The Albertina in Vienna will host a significant retrospective of Lewis Baltz from March 1 to June 2, 2013, organized by the Kunstmuseum Bonn and Kestnergesellschaft Hannover. This exhibition highlights his creations prior to 1990, featuring series such as The Tract Houses (1969-1971) and Generic Night Cities (1989-2000). Following 1989, Baltz transitioned to creating site-specific public art, marking The Deaths in Newport (1989) as a pivotal moment. He voiced his discontent with America during the Reagan administration and distanced himself from the populism of the 'photography world.' His later works delve into surveillance technologies. Baltz also collaborated with architect Jean Nouvel in Tuscany, asserting that art is essential for appreciating beauty. Recent exhibitions place his work alongside that of prominent artists.
