Legionella Outbreak in NYC Claims Third Victim

A Legionnaires' disease outbreak in New York City's Upper East Side has caused a third death, with 74 confirmed infections and 59 hospitalizations. Health Commissioner Alister F. Martin expressed condolences. The outbreak is stabilizing, with new cases dropping to about one per day between July 10-17, down from over eight daily earlier in July. No recent symptoms have been reported for over a week, suggesting the contamination source has been eliminated. The bacteria was found in 76 cooling towers in the Upper East Side and one in the Upper West Side; all positive systems were cleaned and disinfected by July 16. The outbreak has renewed debate on oversight of cooling towers, as over 250 towers received violations since last year, most in Manhattan. A similar outbreak in Harlem in 2025 caused five deaths and 114 infections.
