Laura Dern to Portray Journalist Julie K. Brown in Series About Epstein Investigation

Academy Award-winning actress Laura Dern has been cast to play Miami Herald investigative reporter Julie K. Brown in an upcoming television series based on Brown's book "Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein Story." The project, currently in development, will dramatize Brown's years-long investigation that uncovered how federal prosecutors arranged a lenient 2008 plea agreement for financier Jeffrey Epstein, who faced charges of sex trafficking involving minors. Under that arrangement, Epstein avoided a potential life sentence and instead served 13 months in a county jail with work release privileges. Brown's reporting identified 80 victims and contributed to the eventual arrests of Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell. The series is being adapted for television by Sharon Hoffman, with Eileen Myers serving as co-showrunner. Executive producers include Dern, Adam McKay, Kevin Messick, and Brown herself. Although Sony Pictures Television is still seeking distribution, industry observers anticipate the project will move forward given the involvement of Dern and McKay. In a recent discussion with journalist Katie Couric, Brown reflected on her motivation to reexamine the case, noting that Epstein's continued freedom while harming children drove her to investigate how powerful individuals enabled his impunity. She also mentioned that the nomination of Alexander Acosta—the former U.S. Attorney who approved the plea deal—as Labor Secretary under President Donald Trump renewed public attention on the case. The series aims to provide an explosive account of Brown's journalistic work and the systemic failures that allowed Epstein to evade justice for years.
