Laing Art Gallery Showcases Early Modern Scottish Artworks from Its Collection

The Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle features early modern Scottish art from its holdings, highlighted by curator Alice Strang. The collection includes works by Edward Atkinson Hornel, Flora Macdonald Reid, Francis Henry Newbery, and Samuel John Peploe. Hornel's 1902 painting 'The Little Mushroom Gatherers' depicts children in natural settings, influenced by his travels in Japan. Reid's 1905 work 'Comrades' presents an intimate narrative scene set in a market, reflecting her naturalist style. Newbery's 'The Lady of the Carnation' from around 1919 portrays a model in a dress designed by his wife, emphasizing female beauty. Peploe's early 1920s piece 'Yellow Tulips and Statuette' exemplifies his still-life mastery as part of the Scottish Colourists. These artworks illustrate the development of Scottish art from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, with acquisitions spanning from 1915 to 1948.
