LA Commons Gala Marks Historic South LA Black Cultural District With Lauren Halsey Among Honorees

On October 15, the Skirball Cultural Center hosted LA Commons's 2026 Colors of Connection gala, celebrating California's designation of the Historic South Los Angeles Black Cultural District in December 2025. This event marked the nonprofit's 25th anniversary and honored three community leaders: artist Lauren Halsey, entrepreneur and advocate Prophet Walker, and philanthropist Robert K. Ross, the former CEO of the California Endowment. Halsey created a site-specific step-and-repeat for the gala, while d. Sabela grimes showcased an original performance. The program concluded with a benefit auction featuring prints by local artists. Emceed by Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, the evening attracted notable guests, including artists and collectors, and launched LA Commons's first art sale.
