L.V. Hull's 'Love Is a Sensation' Exhibition at Mississippi Museum of Art Celebrates Folk Artist's Immersive Environment

The Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson is currently presenting 'Love Is a Sensation,' a major exhibition showcasing the work of self-taught artist L.V. Hull. Running through June 14, the show features Hull's vibrant assemblages and painted objects, many created from everyday items purchased at Walmart. For 35 years, Hull transformed her home and garden in Kosciusko, Mississippi into an elaborate art environment, merging creativity with daily life through found objects, paint, and glue. As a Black woman working in the folk art tradition, her practice existed outside the mainstream art world, contributing to what the museum describes as an incomplete account of American art history. The exhibition highlights her contributions to Southern creative legacy and artist-built environments. It coincides with the upcoming L.V. Hull Legacy Center, scheduled to open this summer. The show includes works like an untitled 2004 acrylic painting on plastic measuring 12.5 x 13.5 x 1.5 inches and another untitled piece featuring a tabletop Christmas tree adorned with bottles. A 2003 photograph by Bruce West captures Hull in her Kosciusko home. The exhibition statement notes that Hull combined art-making with Southern social traditions to connect with her community and visitors from around the world.
