Kunsthaus Zürich presents Bührle Collection in crowded transitional display amid provenance scrutiny

Kunsthaus Zürich is showcasing a permanent loan from the Bührle Foundation, featuring a warehouse-style arrangement of 205 artworks organized chronologically across three rooms, devoid of labels. Attendees are required to refer to a brochure for information on artists and titles. Among the collection, 62 pieces are noted for their "persecution context" linked to previous Jewish ownership. A touchscreen provides insights into provenance and the status of looted art. Noteworthy omissions include Paul Cézanne's "Boy with the Red Vest," currently on loan to Fondation Beyeler, while forgeries, such as a counterfeit Vincent van Gogh self-portrait, are included. The collection ranges from Joachim Patinir's 16th-century "Baptism of Christ" to modernist pieces. Gaps in provenance were highlighted in historian Raphael Gross's 2024 research, with a comprehensive exhibition slated for 2027/2028.
