Kunsthalle Bremen Presents Friedrich Nerly's Roman and Southern Italian Works

Kunsthalle Bremen is hosting a major solo exhibition dedicated to Romantic painter Friedrich Nerly (1807–1878), titled 'Nature and Antiquity: The Romantic Friedrich Nerly in Rome.' The exhibition runs from March 14 to July 5, 2026, and is supported by the Kulturstiftung der Länder with €70,300 in funding. The show focuses on Nerly's early work created in Rome and Southern Italy, featuring his 1836 painting 'Campagna Landscape with Aqua Claudia' as a centerpiece. This painting had been in storage at the museum, which holds about half of Nerly's estate; the other half belongs to the Angermuseum in Erfurt, where a previous exhibition on Nerly in Venice took place in 2024. The exhibition aims to reintroduce Nerly, whose atmospheric landscapes fell into obscurity after his death, to a wider audience and includes comparative works by contemporaries like Carl Blechen and Carl Spitzweg, plus contemporary photographs by Hans-Christian Schink. Additional supporters include the Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung and other institutions.
