Kristin Scott Thomas Leads Chekhov Revival at London's Harold Pinter Theatre
Ian Rickson directs Conor McPherson's adaptation of Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London, running until 9 January 2027. Rickson and McPherson, who first collaborated three decades ago, previously worked together on Uncle Vanya at the same venue in 2020. Kristin Scott Thomas plays Lyubov Ranevskaya, the matriarch confronting financial ruin and the loss of the family estate and its orchard, while Stephen Mangan appears as Lopakhin, a former serf's son turned successful businessman who presses her to accept a solution she refuses to face. Chloe Lamford designed the shabby set and Bruno Poet the lighting. The supporting company includes Vinette Robinson as adopted daughter Varia, Peter Wight as Uncle Leo, Ruby Bentall as the nanny Sharlotta and Karl Johnson as the old servant Firs. Reviewer Diana Carroll finds the production's balance of comedy and tragedy intelligent and the ensemble strong, yet judges the emotional restraint keeps audiences at a distance, unable to share the family's anguish. Scott Thomas's glacial elegance and distinctive voice are singled out as a pleasure, Mangan's charm and energy praised, and Johnson noted for the impact of his closing moments. Carroll concludes that Chekhov's essential duality of folly and sorrow does not fully land here, leaving the play short of universal resonance.
