Knai Bang Chatt Resort Launches Art Residency in Kep, Cambodia

The Knai Bang Chatt resort in Kep, Cambodia, has launched 'Art for Kep', an artist residency that combines art, marine conservation, and tourism. The initiative, founded by Belgian entrepreneur Jef Moons, includes plans for a music and film city and an underwater art gallery. The residency's first participants are Kanha Hul and Karona Hoeuy from Siem Reap. The program emerged after a government beach extension project in 2021 created a 50-meter buffer zone, which Moons leased and developed. Curator Reaksmey Yean serves on the art selection committee. The residency offers artists studio space, resort facilities, and the ability to keep their work. However, Moons imposes restrictions on political content, stating artists cannot express views against former Prime Minister Hun Sen. The project aims to make Kep an artistic and cultural destination, but its long-term viability depends on other planned developments, including an exhibition plaza and the S.E.A. Ocean Gallery. A sculpture by Cambodian artist Sothea Thang, 'Coral Kingdom' (2024), has been installed on the extended oceanfront.
