Kelsey Lu on New Album 'So Help Me God,' Kim Gordon, and Dirt-Filled Performances

Kelsey Lu, 35, released their sophomore album 'So Help Me God,' blending music with film and visual art. In an interview with Vogue, they discussed collaborating with Kim Gordon, Kamasi Washington, Sampha, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Lu met Gordon in 2017 after a show in LA; Gordon later contributed to a cello composition for the album's visuals. The album was recorded in LA with Eve Rossman. Lu cited Céline Sciamma's 2019 film 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' as inspiration, watching it three times in a row during the pandemic. Recent performances included a run at the Blue Note in New York with Diotima gowns and a Liza Minnelli wig, and a Venice installation at Palazzo Diedo where the floor was filled with soil covering charcoal paper works activated during the performance, featuring three musicians and dancer Josh Johnson. Lu now requests a bag of dirt in their rider.
