Keith Haring's Painted Vehicles Debut in New York Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-04

Two automobiles decorated by Keith Haring are being shown together for the first time in New York at Free Parking, a gallery in the West Village operated by CART Dept., a platform founded by collector Larry Warsh to highlight cars as art objects. The exhibition, titled 'Keith Haring: In The Street,' runs from April 9 to 19, 2026, and features a 1963 Buick Special and a 1971 Series III Land Rover, both owned by Warsh. Haring painted the Land Rover in 1983 for the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and the Buick was his first car artwork, created as a gift for the architect of his Soho Pop Shop. The display coincides with the release of the book 'Keith Haring in 3D' by Phaidon on April 22, 2026, edited by Warsh. Concurrently, New York is experiencing increased attention on Haring's work due to a show at the Brant Foundation through May 31, 2026, and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, will host an exhibition also called 'Keith Haring in 3D' from June 6, 2026, to January 25, 2027, where the Buick will travel after April 14. To accompany the vehicle debut, CART Dept. is organizing panel discussions with notable figures such as choreographer Muna Tseng, critic Carlo McCormick, Eric Shiner of Powerhouse Arts, muralist Marka27, and biographer Brad Gooch, focusing on street art themes. Haring's subway drawings from 1980 to 1985 established his role in the transition from graffiti to street art, and these cars represent his later work on mobile canvases before his death in 1990.
