Kazuyo Sejima to Design Visitor Infrastructure at Luis Barragán's Cuadra San Cristóbal

Japanese architect Kazuyo Sejima has been invited to create new visitor infrastructure interventions at the iconic Cuadra San Cristóbal equestrian complex designed by Luis Barragán. The project includes designing restrooms, adding a commercial space, and developing furniture for the cafeteria area. These discreet interventions aim to integrate carefully with the existing architecture while expanding usage conditions and the visitor experience. Sejima, who co-founded SANAA with Ryue Nishizawa, received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2010 alongside Nishizawa. Her work is characterized by spatial precision, structural lightness, transparency, and continuity between interior and exterior. While Sejima's formal language differs from Barragán's—she dissolves spatial boundaries while he creates contained, colorful environments—both architects focus on light, silence, and sensory spatial experience through nearly opposite strategies. The Cuadra San Cristóbal recently transformed into a cultural campus open to the public with a curatorial program exploring architecture-art interaction. Sejima's relationship with Mexico has developed through lectures, exhibitions, and academic encounters, including her participation as a speaker at the MEXTRÓPOLI Architecture and City Festival in 2023.
