Karolina Wiktor's 'Cartography of Motherhood' at Zachęta explores post-stroke aphasia through maternal bonds

Karolina Wiktor's exhibition 'Cartography of Motherhood' at Zachęta – National Gallery of Art in Warsaw runs from February 20th to May 3rd, 2026. It explores her post-stroke aphasia experience through motherhood after a 2009 aneurysm and strokes. Wiktor created the Czcionka Braku (Font of Absence) from incomplete letters during acute aphasia. Curated by Katarzyna Kołodziej-Podsiadło, with spatial design by Maciej Sierpień, the exhibition focuses on her relationship with daughter Iga, using domestic rituals for communication and rehabilitation. It includes games on post-stroke impairments and a film discussing rehabilitation in Warsaw. The NeuroUżyteczna project supports social participation for those with neurological abilities, featuring workshops and meetings. Wiktor's book 'Wołgą przez Afazję' reflects her recovery process.
