Kara Walker Transforms Confederate Monument into New Sculpture and Print for Art Publication

Artist Kara Walker has created a sculpture titled 'Unmanned Drone' (2023) by reconfiguring a decommissioned monument to Confederate General Stonewall Jackson. The monument was acquired by curator Hamza Walker after its removal from Charlottesville, Virginia in 2021 and transported to New York. Walker's 12-foot hybrid sculpture merges the general with his horse, Little Sorrel, and is displayed at the Brick in Los Angeles through May 3 in the 'Monuments' exhibition, co-presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles. The artist also contributed a print titled 'Little Sorrel’s Sorry Saga (Who Else?)' (2023–25) to Art in America's spring issue, based on preparatory drawings for the sculpture. This work responds to ongoing debates about Confederate memorials in the United States.
