market-auction · 2026-08-26

A rediscovered painting by Wassily Kandinsky, "Villa Seeburg am Staffelsee" (1911), fetched €4.4 million at Ketterer auction house in Munich, more than double its pre-sale estimate. The oil-on-cardboard landscape, recently found in a private collection in Gelsenkirchen, was described as having colors that sparkle like jewels. The sale was reported by Lisa Zeitz on August 24, 2026. In a separate auction, Ferdinand Hodler's "Sonnenuntergang am Genfersee von Caux aus" (1917) achieved CHF 6 million at Koller in Zurich, doubling its estimate and marking the second-highest auction price for the Swiss artist. Additionally, a bronze sculpture by Gerhard Marcks, "Sich niedertuende Kuh" (1949), sold for €22,000 at Ahrenshooper Kunstauktionen on August 1, up from its €12,000 estimate. The sculpture, cast at Bildgießerei Barth in Berlin, reflects Marcks' interest in animal subjects and abstracted form.
