Kamrooz Aram's 'Infrequencies' Exhibition at Alexander Gray Associates Abandons Grid for Organic Abstraction

Kamrooz Aram presents his exhibition 'Infrequencies' at Alexander Gray Associates in New York, marking a departure from his previous grid-based compositions. The New York-based artist now employs blossoming rounded patterns that grow vertically on linen surfaces, creating kinetic configurations with unpredictable divergences. Works like 'Diligent Flâneur' (2020) and 'Exuberant Flâneuse' (2020) showcase vibrant colorations using oil, oil crayon, and wax pencil, with aquatic hues and bold reds. Aram's new approach allows floral elements to spring freely across surfaces, referencing Islamic ornamentation traditions while challenging Western visual rationalization. The exhibition, located in Tribeca with soaring ceilings and intricate columns, runs until 11 April. Paintings from the last six years feature untethered swollen shapes that mingle and rub against each other, avoiding rigid networks. 'Murmurations' (2023) introduces turquoise knobs and icy wing-like shapes with a humming rhythm. This shift embodies fleeting appearances and afterthoughts beyond regimented preoccupations.
