Kalshi Launches Art Market Prediction Bets Amid Insider Trading Concerns

Prediction market platform Kalshi has launched a section dedicated to art markets, allowing users to bet on auction outcomes for artists including Andy Warhol, Gustav Klimt, Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso, and Amedeo Modigliani. The US-regulated platform competes with offshore Polymarket, which has hosted occasional art predictions but lacks a dedicated product. Trading volumes remain low—$43,000 wagered on the most expensive auction work this year and just $3,124 on a Lucian Freud piece—compared to $1.35 million on Taylor Swift's wedding location. Critics raise insider trading concerns; auction houses Christie's and Phillips confirmed policies prohibiting employee participation. Independent curator Carlye Packer expressed skepticism, while Felix Art Fair co-founder Dean Valentine warned of abuse opportunities. Artist Maura Brewer, whose video "Leverage" (2024) examines art market manipulation, noted that high-visibility auctions are sometimes fixed. Kalshi's announcement on May 26 touted democratizing access to an illiquid asset class, echoing Masterworks' fractional share model and NFT disruption rhetoric. President Donald Trump has supported Kalshi and Polymarket, and his son Donald Trump Jr. serves as a strategic advisor to Kalshi.
