Kaci Merriwether-Hawkins Builds Global Network for Black Women in G.L.A.M. Through Black Girls in Art Spaces

Kaci Merriwether-Hawkins founded Black Girls in Art Spaces four years ago to create community for Black women in galleries, libraries, archives, and museums. The organization now operates local chapters in New York, Dallas, London, and Nairobi, hosting events like exhibition viewings, artist talks, theater performances, and private workshops. Merriwether-Hawkins, a practicing photographer and content creator, was inspired to start BGIAS after visiting Kwame Brathwaite's traveling "Black Is Beautiful" exhibition in 2022. She aims to challenge the notion that Black women don't belong in fine art and make cultural institutions more accessible. The initiative connects members with museum professionals including curators and public program coordinators, bridging gaps between institutions and underserved audiences. Archivist and member Asha Abdul-Mujeeb notes that BGIAS provides invaluable access to industry experts that many wouldn't otherwise encounter. Merriwether-Hawkins describes the organization as a "community garden" that thrives on member support rather than being solely her creation. Her ultimate goal is fostering a more inclusive art world where Black women feel comfortable and represented.
