Kaari Upson Retrospective at Kunsthalle Mannheim Features Dollhouse Installation and New Works

Kunsthalle Mannheim is presenting the first major German museum retrospective of American artist Kaari Upson (1970–2021), running until May 31, 2026. The exhibition includes significant installations like THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS OUTSIDE, a walk-in dollhouse that transforms personal memory into universal themes, and premieres works from her Foot Face series. Upson, known for exploring memory, identity, and social reality through sculpture, video, and drawing, gained international recognition after participating in the 2019 Venice Biennale. The museum previously acquired her work Mother's Legs in 2020. The retrospective examines her practice of converting biographical experiences from California into psychological investigations, as seen in projects like The Larry Project, which blurs boundaries between reality and fiction.
