Juvenal's Satires: A Scathing Portrait of Roman Decadence

Decimus Junius Juvenalis, known as Juvenal, is the enigmatic Roman poet behind the *Satires*, 16 poems published in five books from around 110 AD under Trajan and Hadrian. Born probably in Aquinum during Nero's reign (54–68 AD), he may have served in the Roman army in Britain and later studied under rhetorician Quintilian. His work targets corrupt senators, the patron-client system, women, foreigners, and the urban decay of Rome, using irony and exaggeration. Juvenal's contemporary Martial mentions him, but Pliny the Younger does not, suggesting limited initial recognition. The *Satires* gained popularity in the 4th century, valued by Christian commentators like St. Jerome for moral critiques. Modern scholars like Gilbert Highet note their raw emotional power but caution against taking them as historical fact. Later influences include Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, Samuel Johnson (whose *London* adapts Satire 3), Geoffrey Chaucer, and possibly Shakespeare. Juvenal coined 'bread and circuses' (*panem et circenses*) and 'a healthy mind in a healthy body' (*mens sana in corpore sano*), the latter inspiring the ASICS acronym. He likely died after Antoninus Pius came to power in 138 AD.
