Jutta Koether's 'Songs of New York' at Galerie Buchholz Surveys Two Decades of Painting

opinion-review · 2026-09-30

At Galerie Buchholz in New York, Jutta Koether's exhibition 'Songs of New York' is on display from 8 September to 31 October 2023. This showcase includes artworks created between the mid-1990s and 2008, which will be featured in the October 2026 edition of ArtReview. Highlights consist of 'Soulpack' (2000) and 'International Community: 3 from the heart of the brain' (1997) located on the ground floor, while upstairs are 'Homohomo 2' (2002) and 'Metal Maniacs #2' (2008). Koether, who emerged from Cologne's 1980s art scene, uses red and black in her pieces. Although there is no opening performance, the exhibition pairs an untitled work from 1943 by Fay Ruffo with Koether's 'Dance at Madison Square Garden' (1995). Additionally, two oils from 1997 draw inspiration from Blake and Benjamin.
