Julia May Jonas Reimagines Arthur Miller's All My Sons at Lincoln Center

Playwright Julia May Jonas has premiered A Woman Among Women at Lincoln Center Theater, a feminist reinterpretation of Arthur Miller's All My Sons. The play, which debuted at the Bushwick Starr in 2024, is the first in a five-play cycle titled All Long True American Stories, also tackling works by Eugene O'Neill, Sam Shepard, David Mamet, and Edward Albee. Jonas shifts Miller's post-war narrative about a factory owner to focus on Cleo, a sixty-something therapist running a women's wellness center in Northampton, MA. The story explores themes of truth, responsibility, and communal care after Cleo's daughter Jo is jailed following an altercation. Directed by Sarah Catherine Hughes, the play is performed in the round, with the audience seated concentrically to foster a sense of community and complicity. Jonas, who also adapted her novel Vladimir for Netflix, emphasizes authentic female experiences over simply regendering male roles. Her next novel, Diana, is due out next spring.
