Joyce Wang Studio Designs Retro-Futuristic Dining Complex at Hong Kong Racecourse
Joyce Wang Studio has designed Genso, a new dining venue located within the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Sha Tin Racecourse. The two-level establishment combines dining, entertainment, and views of live horse racing. Designer Joyce Wang drew inspiration from retrofuturism, blending elements from Tokyo's Golden Gai district, manga culture, and the visual style of the film Blade Runner. The lower floor features the Fudo Town Food Hall, designed to evoke the lively atmosphere of a Japanese market. The upper level houses an Izakaya, a casual pub-style space for socializing with drinks and small plates, offering a calmer environment overlooking the activity below. Both areas include food and beverage services, arcade-style games, and views of the racing track. The color scheme incorporates teal, aqua, orange, and peach tones, with warm woodwork and patterned fabrics adding a midcentury touch. Neon lighting elements and ceramic details reference urban signage and manga aesthetics. Joyce Wang Studio collaborated with Singapore-based Foreign Policy on interior graphics and branding to develop Genso's visual identity. Wang described the project as a retro dreamscape intended to foster community, nostalgia, and playful exploration for guests. The design aims to stretch the dining experience conceptually from Hong Kong's harbor to its peaks, reflecting the city's multidimensional urban landscape.
