JotaJota+ Designs Madrid Mattress Store with Yellow Pathways and Private Testing Areas

The architecture studio JotaJota+ has completed a retail space for mattress retailer Colchón Exprés in Madrid, Spain. The 285-square-meter store, located on Calle Ribera de Curtidores, features a distinctive design centered around bright yellow elements that guide customer movement and create intimate product testing zones. Design directors Jorge Gabaldón and Javier Onrubia organized the interior as a sequence of distinct environments rather than a continuous retail floor, allowing visitors to engage with mattresses in conditions resembling domestic settings. Key design elements include a sinuous yellow curtain rail, circular yellow carpeted islands that define individual product areas, and sheer curtains suspended from tracks at varying heights to partition spaces. The store's layout encourages individual exploration through multiple pathways, with curtains providing privacy for customers testing comfort. Wood paneling forms a uniform backdrop for headboards and brand signage, while utilities like lighting tracks remain exposed against white ceilings. Lighting includes spotlights from Barcelona-based Luz Negra, suspended paper shades from Danish brand Hay, and wall-mounted lamps to create a residential atmosphere.
