publication · 2026-09-30

Dutch artist John Körmeling, known for public artworks such as the rotating house in Tilburg, was invited in 1991 to design a bridge for the center of Utrecht. He concluded that the bridge should not have been built at all. In a conversation with Lieneke Hulshof published by Mister Motley, Körmeling elaborates on this view. The article includes a selection of his other projects: Happy Street at the Netherlands Pavilion for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China; Artiesteningang at the Middelheimmuseum in Antwerp; De Kloppende Kalender at Lange Voorhout during Blow Up in The Hague (photo by Ronald Smits); Paviljoen voor de vogelaar at Prins Hendrikzanddijk on Texel; and Fruitstad (photo by Peter Cox). The piece was written by Lieneke Hulshof, and the variable font Prophet by Dinamo was used for titles, quotes, and captions.
