John Giorno Retrospective 'The Performative Word' Opens at MAMbo Bologna Through 2026

MAMbo in Bologna is showcasing 'John Giorno: The Performative Word,' a retrospective that will be on display until May 3, 2026, under the curation of Lorenzo Balbi. The exhibition focuses on Giorno's ability to turn poetic language into visual and performance art, featuring the 1969 work 'Dial-A-Poem,' which comprises recordings from 132 writers, including Patti Smith and Allen Ginsberg. Additionally, MAMbo has launched 'Dial-A-Poem Italy' with contributions from over thirty contemporary Italian poets. The exhibit features various art forms, including 'Perfect Flowers,' 'Vinyl Paintings,' 'Black & White Paintings,' 'Works on Paper,' 'Early Prints,' and 'Rainbow Paintings.' Archival materials by Nicola Ricciardi and video installations by Ugo Rondinone highlight Giorno's influence on poetry and activism, particularly in AIDS advocacy.
