Johanna Binder's 'Becoming Islanders' Exhibition Opens March 2026, Curated by Anežka Januschka

On March 17, 2026, at 18:00, Johanna Binder's exhibition titled 'Becoming Islanders' will be inaugurated, under the curation of Anežka Januschka. This exhibition delves into themes of environmental engineering, colonial dominance, and speculative ecology, drawing on Binder's research related to the colonial past of Ascension Island. It explores the dynamics of plant migration and the interactions between human and non-human entities within an environment that now functions as a military and communication hub. Johanna Binder, who has pursued studies in painting and animation at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, is presently a PhD candidate focusing on artistic research at the Mozarteum Salzburg. She has previously held positions as a scholar at both the Van Eyck Academie and the Leuphana Arts Program at Leuphana University Lüneburg. Among her numerous accolades are the 2024 Art Albina Award and the 2022 Theodor Körner Prize. Her artistic contributions have been displayed in various prestigious venues, including the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Salzburger Kunstverein, Xiao Ying Art Museum, and Fünfzigzwanzig. The gallery where this exhibition will take place is open from Thursday to Saturday, from 11:00 to 19:00 each week.
