Joe Mantello's Broadway Revival of Death of a Salesman Draws from Arthur Miller's 1948 Draft

Director Joe Mantello is staging a new Broadway production of Arthur Miller's classic play "Death of a Salesman," currently in previews. Seeking a fresh approach, Mantello requested a version of the script without extensive stage directions and descriptions. The Miller estate provided him with a 1948 draft typescript from the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, created the year before the play's 1949 Broadway premiere. This draft, featuring Miller's handwritten edits and a note declaring it his final script, offered Mantello significant insights. He noted Miller's unconventional labeling of the play as "conversations in two acts and requiem" and observed textual changes, such as altering a line of dialogue to shift a marital complaint into an existential lament. The draft also listed separate young versions of the Loman brothers, Biff and Happy, contrasting with the precedent set by Elia Kazan's original 1949 production where older actors portrayed the characters at different ages. Mantello found the set descriptions more impressionistic compared to the realistic designs by Jo Mielziner used in earlier productions. These elements inspired a spare, purgatorial concept for the revival. Actors Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf star as Willy and Linda Loman. Lane stated that given the numerous past productions, a radical approach was necessary. Mantello's production aims to distinguish itself by aligning more closely with Miller's initial creative vision.
