Joan Kron, 98, Recalls Pop Art Exploits Ahead of Memoir

publication · 2026-10-16

At the age of 98, Joan Kron has experienced a multitude of roles: she pioneered journalism focused on plastic surgery, assisted Andy Warhol in launching his inaugural perfume, organized the Velvet Underground's debut concert in Philadelphia, and commissioned Roy Lichtenstein's "Super Sunset Billboard." This 1967 piece, a reimagined version of which is currently featured in the late Pop artist's exhibition at the Whitney, exemplifies her extensive behind-the-scenes contributions. In a special interview today, the tireless Kron shares captivating anecdotes with reporter Isabella Segalovich, with more tales anticipated in her upcoming memoir, The Renegade Housewives of Pop Art — I can't wait to grab a copy. Additionally, WPA-era murals by Black artists in Harlem have been restored, the art community gathers at a champagne-filled Frieze London, we suggest books on the rich heritage of textile art, and critic John Yau identifies Pop art influences in Valerio Adami's works. —Lakshmi Rivera Amin, associate editor
