Jerry Hsu's Photobook 'How About Never' Chronicles His Marriage's End

Former professional skateboarder Jerry Hsu has released a new photobook, 'How About Never,' published by MACK in 2026. The book documents his relationship with Los Angeles and the dissolution of his marriage, using street photography as a proxy for his emotional state. Hsu moved from the Bay Area to LA in his 20s, trading his camcorder for a Leica M7, and developed an outsider's perspective on the city. The book's imagery ranges from bleakness to hopefulness, featuring strangers, injuries, and everyday scenes that reflect his feelings during the relationship. His wife appears in the book but her face is shown only once, at the end, symbolizing her mystery to him. Hsu notes that the project is more about his relationship than about LA, and that he and his ex-wife remain on good terms. He is now working on a new project based on Hi8 tapes from 1993, when he was 12, capturing his family's gatherings and his early skateboarding, exploring his experience as the child of immigrants and his path to becoming a pro skateboarder at 16.
