Architectural designer Jennifer Bonner and interior designer Carol Mockbee have completed Kate's House, a 2,650-square-foot residence on Florida's Gulf Coast near Seaside. Built for Bonner's family as a tribute to her late stepfather, the project challenges strict homeowner association guidelines through playful rebellion. The house features a floating white massing with two offset gables and overscaled pink-hued eaves designed to mimic dusk light. Mockbee's interior design avoids coastal clichés, using terrazzo tiles to evoke sand and convex mirrors to capture specific lighting conditions. The structure sits on a dark foundation that creates a buoy-like appearance, while interior millwork celebrates the family's carpentry business with exposed white oak paneling. Regulatory requirements for a symmetrical facade resulted in a narrow street-facing porch and deep interior niches. The design employs what Bonner calls "cute" aesthetics as a subversive tool against rigid local building traditions, focusing on themes of accumulation and erosion rather than literal beach references. Technical details include a 12:12 roof pitch, curved transitions between materials, and furniture selections from Southern-based artists.
