cultural-heritage · 2026-10-13

On October 24 at 17:30, British artist Jeanne Henny will give a talk at the Ateneo de Madrid, sharing how a serendipitous meeting on the Camino de Santiago led to the creation of the Jeju Olle Trail in South Korea. In 2006, Henny encountered Suh Myung-sook (Sooky) in Melide, Galicia, and encouraged her to develop a pilgrimage route on Jeju Island. Within a year, Sooky launched the initial trails, which now cover 272 miles and draw over one million visitors each year. After Henny's visit to Jeju in February, where she walked four routes, Sooky passed away from stomach cancer three weeks later. To commemorate Sooky, the Jeju Olle Walking Festival is scheduled from November 4 to 30, 2027. Jeanne Henny, born in 1952, is an opera director and music professor.
