Jean-Pierre Laffont's 'Rebels with a Cause' Chronicles American Counterculture

Jean-Pierre Laffont, a French-American photojournalist, is set to publish a photography book named 'Rebels with a Cause' (Damiani, 2026), which is edited by his spouse, Éliane Laffont, and includes a preface by Lucy Sante. This work delves into the American counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s, showcasing more than 150 images divided into seven thematic sections. Born in 1935 in French Algeria, Laffont relocated to the United States in 1964 and gained citizenship in 2016. He was a co-founder of Gamma USA and Sygma, documenting significant events such as the protests against the Vietnam War and civil rights movements. A preview of the book will occur at Visa pour l'Image 2026 in Perpignan, featuring a signing event on September 3. His earlier publications include 'New York City Up and Down' (2017) and 'New York Noir' (2021).
