Jay Chou buys Matisse's La Séance du Matin for $20m at Sotheby's

Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou purchased Henri Matisse's 1924 painting La Séance du Matin for $20 million (with fees) at Sotheby's New York in June 2026. Chou announced the acquisition on Instagram, recalling his visits to Nice where he would stand outside Matisse's former home and dream of owning a work from that period. An avid collector, Chou told CNN in 2021 that he spends nearly all his concert earnings on art. His collection includes Peter Doig and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
