Javier Silva Meinel's First French Retrospective at Maison de l'Amérique Latine

Maison de l'Amérique latine in Paris presents 'Umbrales, Javier Silva Meinel. Une poétique de l’image', the first French retrospective of Peruvian photographer Javier Silva Meinel, running until July 25, 2026. Curated by Alejandro León Cannock in partnership with Galerie Younique, the exhibition features over one hundred works, including film photographs, digital prints mounted on aluminum, backlit light boxes, and wallpapers. Silva Meinel, a major figure in Latin American photography, has spent over four decades traversing Peru's Pacific coast, Andes mountains, and Amazon rainforest, capturing masks, passages, animals, and the strange. His practice emphasizes patience, dialogue, and reciprocity, creating images that blur reality, imagination, and the symbolic. The exhibition invites visitors into a world both marvelous and uncanny, reflecting his unique studio-on-the-road approach akin to Irving Penn or Martín Chambi.
