Jasper Johns' Flag Works Assembled in New York Exhibition

Craig Starr Gallery in New York will host an exhibition titled 'Jasper Johns: Flags' from April 2 through June 27, 2026. The presentation, developed with the artist and his studio, gathers various artworks exploring the flag motif across different media. Included are paintings, drawings, and sculptures that demonstrate diverse interpretations, such as multiple flags, color variations, monochromatic versions, and flags placed within contrasting backgrounds. Key pieces are on loan from institutions like the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as well as from the artist's own holdings and private collectors. This collection highlights the artist's innovative approaches to a single, enduring symbol, showcasing his technical and conceptual versatility. Johns once recounted that a dream inspired him to create his first flag painting, leading to 'Flag' (1954–55), which is now part of MoMA's collection and marked a significant moment in his career. The exhibition aims to illustrate the breadth of Johns's engagement with this iconic image over time.
