Janet Echelman's Climate Data Sculpture Illuminates MIT Museum Atrium

Artist Janet Echelman has unveiled a large-scale suspended sculpture titled 'Remembering the Future' at the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The installation, which opened in September 2025 and will remain on view through fall 2027, transforms scientific climate data into a three-dimensional textile form. Created in collaboration with MIT professor Caitlin Mueller and climate scientist Raffaele Ferrari, the work visualizes atmospheric and oceanic data spanning from the last ice age to projected future scenarios. The piece uses color, curvature, and density to represent historical and predicted climate patterns, with cooler tones indicating glacial periods and warmer hues reflecting rising temperatures. Developed with the MIT Digital Structures research group, the sculpture employs computational design for stability while appearing weightless. It serves as the centerpiece for the museum's 'TIME' program, offering free public access to an immersive experience that bridges art, science, and environmental awareness.
