Jan Kriwol's "Anomaly": Surreal Sci-Fi Photography on the Śnieżka Summit

Polish photographer Jan Kriwol, born in 1980 in Warsaw where he continues to live and work, has produced a series titled "Anomaly" that departs from the urban settings central to much of his practice. The project was shot on the Śnieżka, the highest mountain of the Western Sudetes, on the border between Poland and the Czech Republic. It was created in collaboration with the design studio Lange & Lange for the sportswear brand Pajak Sport. The images are set in an abandoned meteorological station atop the massif, a modernist circular building that resembles a giant spaceship. Against a snow-dominated landscape under a leaden sky, a mysterious figure in a futuristic suit appears, photographed by Kriwol as if an astronaut had just landed on an unknown planet. The photographs evoke alien worlds and the imagery of "Star Wars." Kriwol is known for surreal, ironic urban images that push reality through optical illusions, unusual perspectives and creative use of digital manipulation.
