James Cohan to host first NY solo show of Mary Sully

James Cohan gallery will present the first solo exhibition in New York of works by Mary Sully, on view at 52 Walker Street from May 15 to June 27, 2026. Curated by Jenelle Porter and organized with the Mary Sully Foundation, the show features Sully's 'personality prints'—inventive drawings begun in the late 1920s that portray celebrities through a mix of representative and abstract elements, sophisticated patterning, and a fusion of modern art and design with Native American art forms. An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 15 from 6-8 PM. A conversation between historian Philip J. Deloria, Sully's great-nephew and author of 'Becoming Mary Sully: Toward an American Indian Abstract,' and curator Jenelle Porter is scheduled for Thursday, May 28 at 6:30 PM.
