James Cameron, the Canadian filmmaker known for works like 'Avatar' and 'Titanic,' has released a two-part documentary titled 'Les secrets des abeilles' on Disney+ starting April 1. The project, which he executive produced and helped create, aims to highlight what humanity stands to lose regarding bees without adopting a preachy tone. Cameron emphasized in an interview with France Inter that the primary goal was not to issue harsh warnings but to gradually underscore the dangers facing these insects. The documentary reveals that bees are socially complex individuals with notable intelligence, far beyond their role as pollinators, and are among Earth's most crucial insects. It features unprecedented footage captured over three years of filming using innovative techniques, showcasing their fascinating architecture and unexpected secrets. National Geographic explorer Bertie Gregory tracks bees across seasons, introducing viewers to over 20,000 species responsible for pollinating one-third of the plants humans consume. Cameron noted learning new facts, such as sex differences among bees, including that males have eyes twice as large as females to ensure accurate mating during flight, after which they die. The series seeks to foster appreciation for bees' extraordinary nature, as stated in a Disney+ press release, which Cameron echoed by expressing that we are only beginning to understand how remarkable they are.
