James Allen Architect Renovates Adelaide Federation Villa into Contemporary Home

James Allen Architect has completed a renovation project in Adelaide, Australia, transforming a deteriorating Federation-style villa into a modern residence. The project, finished in 2023, involved preserving the original front rooms of the historic house while adding a new contemporary pavilion at the back. Designed for a couple moving from rural areas to the city for retirement, the work maintains architectural heritage while introducing modern living spaces. The structure covers 225 square meters and represents a thoughtful adaptation of historic urban housing. Photography documenting the project was handled by Christopher Morrison, with styling contributions from Maz Mis. The project was curated by Miwa Negoro. This renovation demonstrates how historic urban buildings can be sensitively updated to meet contemporary needs while respecting their original character.
