Jamel Shabazz gets first German museum show at Braunschweig

"New York Moves and Black Communities," the inaugural exhibition in Germany showcasing the work of Brooklyn photographer Jamel Shabazz, has been launched at the Museum für Photographie Braunschweig. This exhibition will be available for viewing until September 13, 2026, and includes significant collections of both black-and-white and color photographs dating from the early 1980s, as well as early photo albums and books. Shabazz, who grew up in Brooklyn, started capturing the essence of New York City's residents in the late 1970s. His photographs reflect the street as a backdrop for identity, friendship, and community, with elements of fashion, gesture, music, and poses narrating the experience. He is particularly renowned for his portraits of Black and Latino individuals.
