Italy Allocates €15 Million to Restore Brescia's Roman Theatre, Chipperfield Project in Question

cultural-heritage · 2026-10-21

The Italian Ministry of Culture has approved €15 million for the recovery and reuse of the Teatro Romano in Brescia, as part of the Piano Grandi Progetti Beni culturali 2025-2027. The decree, dated 30 September 2026, was signed by ministers Alessandro Giuli and Giancarlo Giorgetti. The funding was announced by Fondazione Brescia Musei only in recent hours. The money will go toward completing archaeological excavations, restoring ancient structures, and improving accessibility, with the goal of reopening the site for performances and cultural activities. The project is seen as the completion of the Brixia archaeological area's enhancement, following work on the Capitolium, the Republican Sanctuary, and the new display of the Vittoria Alata. Additional support comes from A2A, the Brescia Chamber of Commerce, and Fondazione Cariplo, which has allocated €5.2 million. The preliminary plan by David Chipperfield Architects Milano, presented in 2024 and developed in 2025, aims not to reconstruct but to reinterpret the site, restoring the order of the semicircle and giving coherence to the fragments. Palazzo Maggi Gambara would become the main entrance and technical center. However, the project's implementation depends on further archaeological findings and administrative steps. Mayor Laura Castelletti noted that having €15 million changes perspectives. The Roman Theatre, built in the 1st century AD under the Flavian dynasty, is a key civic and cultural hub of Roman Brescia.
