Italian film critic Pino Farinotti dies at 86

Pino Farinotti, the influential Italian film critic, journalist, writer, and teacher, died on July 16, 2026, in Milan. He was best known for his 'Dizionario dei film', first published in 1980, which became a standard reference work for film enthusiasts and scholars. Farinotti also co-founded MYmovies in 2000, Italy's leading film platform, and taught film history and criticism at the University of Bologna and the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. He collaborated with RAI and the Venice Biennale, and wrote novels including 'La grande ambizione' (winner of the Premio Bancarella Speciale in 1991) and '7 km da Gerusalemme', adapted into a 2007 film by Claudio Malaponti. Hours before his death, he announced a new edition of his novel published by La nave di Teseo.
