Italian AFAM Diplomas to Be Recognized as Full University Degrees

institutional · 2026-06-30

Italian Minister of University and Research Anna Maria Bernini announced that academic diplomas from AFAM institutions—including Academies of Fine Arts, Conservatories, ISIA, and National Academies of Dance and Dramatic Arts—will be officially recognized as university degrees. Speaking at a meeting in Rome with presidents, directors, and student representatives, Bernini described the reform as a historic step that aligns the denomination of qualifications with the quality of educational offerings. The change aims to enhance international recognition and simplify understanding of the titles. The meeting also reviewed recent ministerial investments in infrastructure, internationalization, student support, and PhD programs, with an additional €100 million allocated. On the same day, the Court of Auditors approved a positive report on the AFAM system, noting increased investments and the completion of the nationalization of 22 institutions. The reform covers visual arts, music, design, restoration, theater, and dance, sectors considered strategic for Italy's cultural and creative production.
